January 3, 2007 - PRSSA Affiliate Program offers more benefits
NEW YORK (April 1, 2008) — Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) members came together at their National Assembly, held March 13-16, in San Diego, Calif., to shape the Society’s next 40 years by paving the way for international student participation. Chapter members voted to make the Affiliate Program, a resource for students attending schools that do not meet charter requirements, a permanent fixture of the student Society.
The approved addition to PRSSA Bylaw, Article 1, Section 1, Chapter b, expands the Affiliate Program by allowing international public relations students to become affiliates of the Society.
All students, within the United States and internationally, enrolled in a college or university without a PRSSA Chapter, may receive certain PRSSA benefits by participating in the Affiliate Program. The duration of an affiliate is one year, with the option to renew. The PRSSA National Committee retains the authority to make changes as necessary.
"The Affiliate Program is essential for the growth of our Society,” said PRSSA National President Melissa M. Csuhran. “Acknowledging an increasing global market, the 2008 Assembly voted to allow public relations students from outside the United States to be granted the same opportunity to join PRSSA through the Affiliate Program. Doing so will further the International Coalition initiative, which is designed to educate, share knowledge and create awareness of the expanding scope of public relations among public relations students worldwide.”
The PRSSA Affiliate Program was created in 2006 as a one-year pilot program to provide PRSSA resources to students interested in public relations at schools that do not meet the charter requirements. Since its inception, 57 students have joined and there are currently 34 active affiliates. Because of its success, it was decided that the Affiliate Program be implemented as an ongoing PRSSA initiative.
